Karnataka has one of India’s most developed ecosystems for prosthetics, orthotics, rehabilitation education and assistive technology. Bengaluru’s concentration of hospitals, universities, technology companies and disability organisations is complemented by established rehabilitation services in Manipal, Mysuru, Mangaluru and other regional centres.
However, Karnataka is also a large and geographically diverse state. The availability of specialist services in Bengaluru and coastal urban centres does not automatically translate into accessible rehabilitation for people living in northern districts, rural communities or remote areas of the Western Ghats.
According to the Government of Karnataka, the state covers approximately 191,791 square kilometres. Karnataka had a population of around 61.1 million at the 2011 Census and currently comprises 31 districts.
This combination of scale, clinical capacity and technological expertise gives Karnataka an opportunity to become a national leader in delivering high-quality prosthetic and orthotic care beyond major cities.
Disability Profile
According to Government of India data based on Census 2011, Karnataka had 1,324,205 persons with disabilities, representing approximately 2.2% of the state’s population at the time.
Movement disability was the largest individually reported category, affecting 271,982 people. The census also recorded 264,170 people with visual disabilities, 235,691 with hearing disabilities, 100,013 with multiple disabilities and 90,741 with speech disabilities.
The figures provide an important baseline but predate the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, which expanded the number of recognised disabilities. Karnataka’s current rehabilitation requirements are also influenced by population growth, ageing, road trauma, diabetes, neurological conditions, occupational injuries and improved identification of childhood disabilities.
For the P&O profession, this creates demand across lower- and upper-limb prosthetics, paediatric orthotics, diabetic foot management, spinal bracing, neurological orthoses and mobility products for older adults.
Mobility India: Combining Education and Clinical Practice
Mobility India in Bengaluru is one of Karnataka’s most important prosthetic, orthotic and rehabilitation institutions. Its model combines professional education, clinical service delivery, assistive technology, community-based inclusive development and research.
Its prosthetic and orthotic services include clinical assessment, custom and prefabricated devices, therapy, user training, home-based programmes and follow-up. The organisation also provides wheelchairs, positioning systems, mobility aids and activities-of-daily-living products.
Mobility India’s educational role is particularly significant. It offers both Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes in Prosthetics and Orthotics. The programmes combine clinical training with biomechanics, fabrication, gait analysis, research and emerging technology.
Through its community-based programmes, Mobility India has also extended services into Chamarajanagar, Tumakuru and peri-urban areas around Bengaluru. This provides a practical model for connecting specialist centres with rural communities.
Manipal’s Contribution to the P&O Workforce
Karnataka’s P&O education capacity is further strengthened by the Department of Prosthetics and Orthotics at Manipal College of Health Professions.
Manipal offers a Bachelor in Prosthetics and Orthotics combining classroom teaching, laboratory work, clinical education and internship training. Students learn to assess patients, prescribe and design devices, undertake fabrication and support people with amputations and neuromusculoskeletal conditions.
The programme benefits from access to Manipal’s wider hospital, rehabilitation, engineering and research infrastructure. This creates opportunities for multidisciplinary work and technology development.
With established programmes in both Bengaluru and Manipal, Karnataka is comparatively well placed to educate future prosthetist-orthotists. The next challenge is encouraging graduates to build careers in district hospitals and underserved regions rather than concentrating only in metropolitan centres.
The Association of People with Disability
The Bengaluru-based Association of People with Disability provides another important component of Karnataka’s rehabilitation network.
Its Assistive and Adaptive Technology programme manufactures orthoses including calipers, splints and ankle-foot orthoses, as well as artificial limbs and customised mobility products. The organisation conducts community assessment camps before manufacturing and distributing devices according to individual needs.
APD also produces walkers, standing frames and environmental adaptations. Its work with customised postural supports and three-dimensional printing demonstrates how digital manufacturing can be introduced into community-oriented rehabilitation.
Through weekly taluk clinics and outreach programmes, APD’s physical and social rehabilitation services bring therapy, assessment and referral support closer to rural communities.
Government and Hospital-Based Services
The Karnataka Department for the Empowerment of Differently Abled and Senior Citizens coordinates disability welfare, social protection and empowerment initiatives within the state.
Government and private medical colleges across Karnataka also provide orthopaedic surgery, physical medicine, physiotherapy and rehabilitation. Bengaluru’s tertiary institutions treat complex trauma, spinal cord injury, stroke, cerebral palsy and neurological conditions, while regional hospitals provide essential identification and referral services.
The effectiveness of the system depends on connecting surgical and medical treatment with specialist P&O provision. Patients should move through a coordinated pathway covering pre-prosthetic preparation, device prescription, fabrication, training and long-term review.
Unequal Access Across the State
Despite Karnataka’s strong institutional base, access remains uneven. Bengaluru and Manipal offer education, experienced professionals and advanced facilities, but patients from districts such as Bidar, Kalaburagi, Raichur, Koppal and Yadgir may need to travel significant distances for specialist care.
These journeys become particularly burdensome when a custom device requires several appointments. Children need regular review as they grow, while prosthetic users may require socket adjustments, alignment changes and component repairs.
District-level assessment clinics, scheduled visits by qualified prosthetist-orthotists and locally accessible repair points could reduce these barriers. Tele-rehabilitation can support follow-up and triage, although physical fitting and alignment must remain clinically supervised.
Innovation and Future Priorities
Karnataka’s technology ecosystem creates opportunities for computer-aided design, three-dimensional scanning, additive manufacturing, gait analysis, sensor-based monitoring and digitally coordinated clinical records.
Innovation should complement established clinical skills rather than focus only on equipment. A digitally manufactured device still requires careful assessment, biomechanical understanding, appropriate material selection and outcome evaluation.
The state’s priorities should include stronger rural referral pathways, more P&O positions in public hospitals, support for community-based rehabilitation and closer collaboration between educational institutions, hospitals, disability organisations and technology developers.
Karnataka already possesses many of the elements required for a nationally significant rehabilitation ecosystem. Its next step is to ensure that this expertise reaches people throughout the state, regardless of their district, income or distance from Bengaluru.
