Saudi Arabia is the largest healthcare market in the Gulf, and its rehabilitation sector is growing under the Health Sector Transformation Program, part of Vision 2030, which aims to make services more accessible and efficient (saudipedia.com). For Indian-trained prosthetists and orthotists this means openings in government, military and university hospitals, private hospitals, rehabilitation centres and supplier companies, alongside a long-established Indian workforce across Saudi healthcare.
Typical titles include Prosthetist/Orthotist, Orthotist/Prosthetist, Clinical Specialist, Orthotics/Prosthetics, O&P Specialist and Prosthetic and Orthotic Technician. The words "specialist" and "technician" matter in Saudi Arabia because they usually reflect the professional classification the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCFHS) gives you.
How O&P is regulated in Saudi Arabia
Clinical O&P practice requires professional classification and registration with the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (scfhs.org.sa). Applications are made through the Mumaris Plus portal. Classification assesses your qualification and experience and decides the professional category you can practise under. Registration, the licence to practise, comes after you have lawful residence in the Kingdom.
According to the SCFHS classification requirements (scfhs.org.sa), overseas applicants must submit their qualifications, an academic record describing the programme content, duration and any internship, a valid registration certificate from the authority where they practised with a verification letter, and an employment letter issued within three months confirming clinical practice. Non-Saudi applicants need at least one year of experience. Overseas qualifications must be verified by an SCFHS-approved verification company, which SCFHS names as DataFlow (scfhs.org.sa).
The SCFHS Mumaris FAQ (scfhs.org.sa) explains that you can apply for classification from outside the Kingdom without a Saudi work permit. Depending on your case, the outcome is a direct decision (about 7 working days), a practical evaluation (about 35 working days) or an electronic written exam delivered through Prometric or Pearson VUE (about 30 working days). Classification cannot be completed with an academic record alone, foreign certificates also need equivalence, and the DataFlow final report must be issued before your file moves forward. Registration is valid for two years.
SCFHS does not publish a single O&P-specific checklist on the pages we checked. Employer adverts give a useful guide: a Ministry of National Guard Health Affairs vacancy for Clinical Specialist, Orthotics/Prosthetics in Jeddah asked for a bachelor’s degree in Prosthetics/Orthotics, SCFHS registration, five years of practical experience (two in the specialty) and IELTS 5.5 to 7 (careers.mngha.med.sa). That posting has closed and was listed for Saudi nationals, but it shows how a large government employer frames the role.
What an Indian BPO or MPO needs to know
- Classification level. A four-and-a-half-year BPO is a bachelor’s degree in the specialty, which is what Saudi employers ask for in specialist-level O&P posts. Diploma holders are more likely to be classified at technician level. SCFHS makes the final decision, so do not assume a title until you have your classification.
- MPO and postgraduate study. If you apply on a postgraduate qualification, SCFHS says that qualification must be authenticated. An MPO may support a higher classification, and some employers list postgraduate study or accredited certification as essential for senior posts.
- RCI registration and verification. SCFHS asks for a valid registration certificate from your country of practice plus a verification letter. For Indian O&P professionals that is your Rehabilitation Council of India registration (rehabcouncil.nic.in). Ask RCI early how to obtain a verification letter.
- Experience. The SCFHS minimum is one year for non-Saudis, but hospital employers often want four or five years. A recruiter listing for an Orthotist/Prosthetist in Riyadh asked for four years plus a licence from the country of origin (ccmrecruitment.com).
- Exams. If SCFHS assigns a written exam, it is delivered through Prometric or Pearson VUE. Check in Mumaris Plus whether a test centre in India or an online option is offered for your exam before booking.
- Timelines. DataFlow verification, equivalence and classification together can take several months, before visa processing even starts. Start verification as soon as you are serious.
Employers and job search channels
The main employer groups are Ministry of Health hospitals and health clusters, military and National Guard hospitals, university hospitals, specialist hospitals, private hospital groups, rehabilitation and long-term care centres, and medical device distributors. Government posts often favour Saudi nationals under localisation policies, so private hospitals, rehabilitation centres and supplier companies are a realistic entry point for many Indian applicants.
Search for Prosthetist, Orthotist, Orthotist/Prosthetist, Clinical Specialist O&P, Prosthetic Technician, Orthotic Technician and Rehabilitation Specialist. Useful channels are hospital career portals, LinkedIn and Naukrigulf, which is widely used by Indian jobseekers (naukrigulf.com). If you use an Indian recruitment agency, use only agencies registered with the Government of India, never pay for an offer, and read your contract carefully before signing.
Documents to prepare from India
- BPO and MPO degree certificates (final, not just provisional, as SCFHS will not classify on the academic record alone)
- Full transcripts and a course description showing programme content, duration and internship
- Internship completion certificate
- RCI registration certificate and verification letter
- Experience letters for every post, plus an HR letter dated within three months confirming your current clinical role and start date
- Passport, photographs and a police clearance certificate from Passport Seva if requested
- IELTS or OET results if the employer asks for them
- Degree attestation for the visa, which employers commonly ask for through the state education department, the Ministry of External Affairs and the Saudi Embassy or Consulate; confirm the exact steps with your employer
Visa and employment considerations
An employer must sponsor your work visa and residence permit (Iqama). SCFHS classification can be done from India, but registration requires lawful residence, so the usual sequence is classification, job offer, visa and medical, arrival, Iqama, then SCFHS registration through your employer. Salaries, housing, transport and flight allowances vary widely, so compare the full package and the contract terms, not only the basic pay. Arabic is useful for patient communication, although English is common in large hospitals.
Saudi Arabia is one of the countries covered by India’s Emigration Check Required (ECR) system. Most graduates hold non-ECR passports, but if your passport is marked ECR you need emigration clearance from the Protector of Emigrants through the eMigrate portal, linked from the Ministry of External Affairs website (mea.gov.in). Visa and labour rules change, so confirm current requirements with your employer and official sources.
Technicians, fabrication and supplier-side roles
Diploma-trained Indian O&P technicians can find roles as prosthetic and orthotic technicians in hospital workshops and private fabrication centres. These are normally classified at technician level by SCFHS, and the classification process and documents are similar to those for clinicians. Supplier-side work, such as product specialist, clinical trainer, CAD/CAM and scanning roles or sales for orthopaedic and rehabilitation companies, may not require SCFHS classification if you do not treat patients. Confirm the licence requirement with the employer before you accept, as any patient-facing fitting work normally needs it.
Why Saudi Arabia matters for Bharat CPO readers
Saudi Arabia offers scale. Healthcare investment, rehabilitation growth and a large number of hospitals mean more O&P posts than in most Gulf countries. SCFHS publishes its process, lets you start classification from India and offers exams through Prometric and Pearson VUE, which keeps early steps affordable.
The trade-offs are a strict paperwork trail, high experience expectations at major hospitals and localisation in the public sector. A BPO with several years of documented clinical experience, current RCI registration and an early start on DataFlow verification is in the strongest position.
