USA O&P Careers for Indian CPOs: Certification Pathways

Live vacancies: browse current O&P jobs in the United States on the Bharat CPO jobs board, or search directly on LinkedIn.

The United States is the largest O&P market in the world and a centre of research, componentry and clinical innovation. For Indian prosthetists and orthotists it is also one of the hardest markets to enter as a clinician, because US certification is built around a master’s degree and an accredited residency rather than a bachelor’s qualification.

The Indian diaspora in the US is large, and many Indian students go there for postgraduate study. Clinicians are titled Certified Orthotist, Certified Prosthetist or Certified Prosthetist Orthotist (CPO), and the US also has distinct assistant, technician and fitter roles that Indian readers should understand separately.

How O&P is regulated in the USA

Three organisations shape the profession. The National Commission on Orthotic and Prosthetic Education (NCOPE) accredits residency programmes and reviews practitioner, assistant and technician academic programmes for CAAHEP accreditation (ncope.org). The American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics & Pedorthics (ABC) certifies practitioners (abcop.org). The Board of Certification/Accreditation (BOC) offers credentials including Certified Orthotic Fitter, Certified Mastectomy Fitter and Certified Durable Medical Equipment Specialist (bocusa.org).

For ABC orthotist/prosthetist certification, candidates need either a master’s degree in orthotics and prosthetics from a CAAHEP-accredited programme or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to such a master’s degree by World Education Services (WES). They then complete an NCOPE-accredited residency, 12 months for one discipline or 18 months for both, and pass the Written, Simulation and CPM exams. ABC says its practitioner exams are moving to dual-discipline only, with the first dual-discipline CPM in March 2027 and Simulation in April 2027 (abcop.org).

Licensure is a state matter. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that some states require a licence and that requirements vary, while employers usually prefer certification (bls.gov). Check the board in the state where you plan to work.

What an Indian BPO or MPO needs to know

NCOPE states that entry to an accredited residency has identical requirements for US-trained and internationally educated candidates, including completion of a master’s degree in orthotics and prosthetics. Non-US degrees need a document-by-document WES report sent directly to NCOPE, and NCOPE recognises only WES evaluations. NCOPE does not accredit transitional degrees, does not advise on coursework to reach master’s level, and does not help with visas or funding (ncope.org).

In practice this means:

  • A BPO is a bachelor’s qualification, so most Indian BPO graduates should not expect WES to rate it as equivalent to a US O&P master’s. The usual route is to complete a US master’s in orthotics and prosthetics, then an NCOPE residency, then ABC exams.
  • An Indian MPO may be assessed differently, but equivalence depends on the WES finding and is not guaranteed. Request a WES evaluation before making plans.
  • NCOPE lists around 15 practitioner programmes, mostly master’s level, at universities such as Northwestern, Pittsburgh, Baylor, UT Southwestern and the University of Washington (ncope.org). Admission is competitive and international fees are high.
  • Realistically, the master’s, residency and exams together take three years or more, plus application time.

Employers and job search channels

Employers include private O&P practices and national clinic networks, hospitals and rehabilitation centres, veterans’ care, academic centres and manufacturers. BLS reports a median wage of 81,110 US dollars (May 2025), about 9,500 jobs and projected growth of 13 percent between 2025 and 2035 (bls.gov). Common titles include Certified Prosthetist Orthotist, Orthotic Resident, O&P Assistant, O&P Technician and Certified Orthotic Fitter. Residency openings are listed through NCOPE’s residency directory and OPRESCAS application system.

Documents to prepare from India

  • Degree certificates and official transcripts sent by your university in the format WES requires.
  • Internship certificate and clinical hours, useful for admissions and residency applications.
  • RCI Central Rehabilitation Register certificate and verification from the Rehabilitation Council of India, if a school, employer or state board asks.
  • English test scores required by your chosen university.
  • Passport, financial documents for a student visa, and a police clearance certificate if requested (usually through Passport Seva).
  • Experience letters and references from Indian employers and faculty.

Visa and employment considerations

Most Indian CPOs enter the US first as students. The State Department explains that you apply to a SEVP-approved school, are registered in SEVIS and pay the I-901 fee, receive a Form I-20, and then attend a visa interview (travel.state.gov). Working after study usually needs employer sponsorship. The H-1B category covers specialty occupations requiring at least a bachelor’s degree, requires an employer petition approved by USCIS, and is subject to annual caps (travel.state.gov). US immigration rules and fees have changed often in recent years, so check official sources and take advice from a qualified immigration attorney. ECR passport holders should confirm with the Protector of Emigrants whether any eMigrate clearance applies.

Technicians, fabrication and supplier-side roles

Certificate and associate-level pathways exist below practitioner level. NCOPE lists accredited O&P technician programmes at Joliet Junior College, Bluegrass Community and Technical College and Century College, plus accredited assistant programmes (ncope.org). BOC certifies orthotic fitters, mastectomy fitters and DME specialists. These roles can suit Indian DPO holders or BPO graduates who want hands-on work, but they still require a valid US visa, and eligibility rules for each credential should be checked directly with BOC or ABC. Manufacturers and central fabrication facilities also hire for CAD/CAM, sales and clinical support roles.

Why the USA matters for Bharat CPO readers

The US sets many of the clinical and technical standards Indian CPOs see in componentry, research papers and CPD. Even for those who never move, ABC, NCOPE and BOC frameworks are a useful benchmark for skills and career structure.

For those who do want to practise there, the honest picture is that a US master’s, residency and certification are usually needed, at significant cost and time, with visas as a separate hurdle. Plan it as a postgraduate career investment, get a WES evaluation early, and compare it carefully with routes such as Canada or Australia.
