The United Arab Emirates is one of the most familiar overseas destinations for Indian-trained prosthetists and orthotists. It is a short flight from Kochi, Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi or Hyderabad, the Indian community is one of the largest expatriate groups in the country, and a number of major private healthcare groups were founded by Indian doctors and entrepreneurs. Demand for O&P comes from hospital rehabilitation departments, private orthotic and prosthetic clinics, paediatric and spinal services, diabetic foot and sports injury care, and supplier-side companies.
Job titles vary from employer to employer. You will see Prosthetist, Orthotist, Prosthetist/Orthotist, Orthotist and Prosthetist (O&P) Specialist, Orthotic Technician and Prosthetics Technician. The title you are licensed under matters, because the regulator assesses you against a specific professional category, and a BPO graduate should normally aim for the clinical prosthetist/orthotist category rather than a technician licence.
How O&P is regulated in the UAE
There is no single national licence. Your regulator depends on where the job is. Dubai is licensed by the Dubai Health Authority through its Sheryan system (services.dha.gov.ae), Abu Dhabi by the Department of Health (doh.gov.ae), and the Northern Emirates generally by the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP). Facilities inside the Dubai Healthcare City free zone are licensed separately by the Dubai Healthcare City Authority (dhcc.ae).
All the main regulators work from the unified Professional Qualification Requirements (PQR), issued jointly by MOHAP, DOH, DHA and the Sharjah Health Authority (doh.gov.ae). The PQR lists Prosthetics and Orthotics as an allied health category. The published version cited by our sister site IMEA CPO describes the requirement as a bachelor degree or diploma of at least three years in Prosthetics and Orthotics, plus two years of post-qualification experience. We were unable to open the current PQR PDF directly while preparing this guide, so check the latest version on the regulator’s website before you apply.
For the federal route, MOHAP describes a clear sequence (mohap.gov.ae): check eligibility in the PQR, apply online for evaluation, upload documents including a Certificate of Good Standing issued within the past six months, pay fees, and wait for the evaluation officer to decide whether an exam is needed. Documents are then sent to DataFlow for primary source verification. MOHAP exams are run by Prometric, are marked Pass or Fail with a 60% pass mark, and are limited to three attempts. Once you hold the evaluation certificate, you can get a job offer and apply for the licence itself.
Dubai Healthcare City publishes the most detailed O&P criteria (dhcc.ae). For an Orthotist or Prosthetist it asks for a bachelor’s degree in the discipline or a BSc in Orthotics and Prosthetics, two years of experience in that role, a current licence or registration to practise, and a good standing certificate from each jurisdiction where you are registered, issued within the last six months. If your degree was not taught in English, you need IELTS (minimum band 5.0), OET (grade C), TOEFL or Cambridge English. No DHCA licensing exam is listed for these titles.
What an Indian BPO or MPO needs to know
On paper, an Indian BPO (four and a half years including internship) is longer than the three-year minimum described in the PQR, and the DHCC wording of a bachelor’s degree in Orthotics and Prosthetics fits a BPO closely. An MPO strengthens your file, but the regulators assess the qualification that gives you entry to the profession, so your BPO transcripts still matter. A DPO or other diploma holder is more likely to be assessed for a technician category, and should check the PQR wording for diplomas carefully.
- Experience is the usual gap. Two years of post-qualification experience is the commonly cited requirement. Your compulsory internship is part of the degree and may not count. Get experience letters that state your role, dates and full-time status.
- RCI registration is your home licence. Regulators ask for a current licence and a good standing certificate. For Indian O&P professionals this means registration on the Rehabilitation Council of India’s Central Rehabilitation Register (rehabcouncil.nic.in). Keep it current and ask RCI early how it issues good standing or verification letters, as these must be recent.
- ISPO accreditation helps, but is not a UAE requirement. ISPO lists Mobility India in Bengaluru among its accredited Prosthetist/Orthotist programmes (ispoint.org). Accreditation can help an evaluator understand your training, but the UAE regulators assess against the PQR, not ISPO status.
- Allow several months. Primary source verification depends on your university, RCI and past employers responding to DataFlow. Delays at any one of them hold up the whole file.
Employers and job search channels
Employers include government hospitals, large private hospital groups, specialist rehabilitation centres, private O&P clinics and supplier companies. Several big private groups have Indian founders, which often means familiarity with Indian qualifications and a large Indian workforce. Aster DM Healthcare was founded by Dr Azad Moopen as a single clinic in Dubai in 1987 and lists jobs through its careers portal (asterdmhealthcare.com). Burjeel Holdings was founded in Abu Dhabi by Dr Shamsheer Vayalil and runs a careers page with a separate allied health route (burjeelholdings.com).
Search for Prosthetist, Orthotist, Prosthetist Orthotist, O&P Clinician, Orthotic Technician, Prosthetic Technician and Product Specialist (Orthopaedics). Useful channels are LinkedIn, Naukrigulf (naukrigulf.com), GulfTalent (gulftalent.com) and hospital career portals. Be cautious with recruiters: Burjeel, for example, states that it does not charge applicants fees and does not use third parties in recruitment. Never pay for a job offer, and check that any Indian recruiting agent you use is registered with the Government of India.
Documents to prepare from India
- BPO and, if applicable, MPO degree certificates, plus provisional certificates if the final degree is still pending
- Full transcripts or mark sheets for every year, with subject and clinical hours where your institution can provide them
- Internship completion certificate
- RCI registration certificate and a recent good standing or verification letter (within six months)
- Experience letters on letterhead with dates, title and duties, and a current employment letter
- Passport valid well beyond your intended move, passport photographs and a police clearance certificate from Passport Seva if requested
- IELTS or OET results if your degree was not taught in English or your employer asks for them
- Degree attestation for the visa stage, which employers commonly ask for through the state education department, the Ministry of External Affairs and the UAE Embassy; confirm the exact chain with your employer
Visa and employment considerations
Licensing and the work visa are separate. In practice you secure a job offer once you have a positive evaluation or eligibility letter, then the employer sponsors your entry permit, medical test, Emirates ID and residence visa and activates your licence under its facility. Rules and fees change, so rely on official sources.
The UAE is one of the countries covered by India’s Emigration Check Required (ECR) system. Most graduates hold non-ECR passports, but if your passport is marked ECR you need emigration clearance from the Protector of Emigrants through the eMigrate portal, which is linked from the Ministry of External Affairs website (mea.gov.in). Check your passport status before you sign a contract.
Technicians, fabrication and supplier-side roles
Orthotic Technician and Prosthetics Technician have their own licensing categories in the DHCC framework, which gives Indian DPO holders and workshop-trained technicians a recognised route, usually with lower entry requirements than the clinical titles. Supplier and distributor roles, such as product specialist, clinical trainer, CAD/CAM operator or sales, may not need a clinical licence at all, but any role involving patient assessment or fitting normally does. Ask the employer in writing which licence, if any, the position requires.
Why the UAE matters for Bharat CPO readers
For many Indian CPOs the UAE is the first step abroad: the licensing rules are published, a BPO maps well to the stated qualification, English is the working language in most clinics, and home is only a few hours away. The main hurdles are two years of solid post-qualification experience, a clean verification trail through DataFlow, and choosing the right emirate and regulator from the start.
Start by building documented experience in India, keep your RCI registration active, and collect your transcripts and experience letters before you apply. A well-prepared file saves months.
