Ten people with upper-limb loss from Andhra Pradesh’s Nandyal district have received prosthetic hands free of charge following a screening and fitting camp held in Anantapur.
The camp was organised jointly by the Andhra Pradesh State Branch of the Indian Red Cross Society and Rotary as part of a wider programme to improve access to functional prosthetic hands for people who cannot afford them.
According to The Hans India, 15 prospective beneficiaries travelled from Nandyal to Anantapur for clinical assessment. Ten were found to meet the fitting criteria and received devices following evaluation by the clinical team.
The Nandyal delegation was coordinated by Red Cross District Field Officer Abdullah, with Gururaja English Medium School supporting transportation and other logistics.
Prosthetic hands valued at ₹30,000 each
Nandyal Red Cross chairman Dastagiri Parl said the prosthetic hands were valued at approximately ₹30,000 each but were supplied to the selected beneficiaries without charge.
The devices were intended for people with transradial limb loss who retained sufficient residual-limb length for the attachment system. The local report stated that candidates required between five and ten inches of residual limb below the elbow.
Recipients were assessed before fitting to establish whether the device was appropriate for their anatomy and functional needs. The hands can assist with selected two-handed activities, including stabilising, holding and carrying objects.
Camp organisers reported that the devices could support routine tasks and handle loads of up to five kilograms. Actual performance will depend on the activity, fitting, residual-limb condition and the individual’s ability to operate the device safely.
Part of Andhra Pradesh’s Project Cheyutha
The Anantapur camp forms part of Project Cheyutha, a statewide collaboration involving the Andhra Pradesh Red Cross, Rotary and the international LN-4 Hand Project.
The initiative was established to identify children and adults with upper-limb differences who may benefit from a simple functional hand but face financial or geographic barriers to accessing prosthetic services.
Earlier plans outlined a series of regional camps, including events in Guntur, Vizianagaram and Anantapur. District welfare departments, hospitals, rehabilitation centres, schools and voluntary organisations were asked to help identify potential beneficiaries.
The programme has also received support from the US-based Tangience Foundation. Its stated objective is to provide LN-4 hands free of charge to eligible recipients across Andhra Pradesh.
How the LN-4 hand functions
The LN-4 is a lightweight mechanical prosthetic hand designed for people with below-elbow limb loss.
According to the LN-4 Hand Project, the device uses two movable mechanical digits that close against three fixed digits. A ratchet mechanism holds the movable digits in a selected position. The user closes the grip by pressing the hand against another surface, such as the opposite hand, leg or table, and releases it by applying pressure to the reverse side of the mechanism.
It has no motors, batteries or electronic controls. This makes the device relatively simple to distribute and maintain in settings where access to advanced upper-limb prosthetic services may be limited.
The manufacturer ordinarily recommends at least 14cm of residual limb below the elbow, a fully healed arm and sufficient elbow movement to support fitting and use. Remaining fingers or a functional wrist may make the standard device unsuitable, as a person’s existing anatomy may offer greater function than the prosthesis.
These criteria help explain why only ten of the 15 people taken from Nandyal received hands during the camp. Screening candidates rather than distributing devices indiscriminately is an important part of responsible prosthetic provision.
Training determines whether a hand is useful
Providing an upper-limb prosthesis is only the first step. Recipients must learn how to position the device, close and release its grip, select suitable objects and integrate it into two-handed activities.
Training should focus on tasks that matter to each person. One recipient may want help holding paper while writing, another may need to stabilise an object at work, while someone else may prioritise cooking, personal care or cycling.
The device will not reproduce the dexterity or sensory feedback of an anatomical hand, and it will not be the best option for every person with upper-limb loss. Some users may prefer a body-powered prosthesis, task-specific terminal device, cosmetic hand or no prosthesis.
Follow-up is therefore important to check the attachment, resolve discomfort, review actual usage and determine whether adjustments or an alternative solution are required.
Turning a camp into continuing care
The Anantapur event shows how cooperation between district organisations, schools, disability services and charitable partners can help people reach assessment services that may otherwise remain inaccessible.
Its longer-term value will depend on whether recipients continue to use their devices successfully. Recording functional goals, providing training and arranging a route for repairs or replacement cuffs would allow the organisers to measure outcomes beyond the number of hands distributed.
For the ten beneficiaries from Nandyal, the camp has provided a new functional option without the barrier of a ₹30,000 purchase cost. For Project Cheyutha, their experience can help inform how future camps identify, fit, train and support upper-limb prosthesis users across Andhra Pradesh.
